Nutrition Foundations
The top question I get asked from clients is ‘what supplement should I take to help ___’.
In most cases, supplementation is the last resort.
Supplements are a synthetic version of nutrients. They are great if you are deficient and simple cannot get enough from diet alone. But in general, they are poorly absorbed, unnecessary additions to most healthy balanced diets.
Nutrition is really quite simple if you follow the basic pillars:
1. Quantity - eat to much and you will gain weight, eat too little and you will lose weight.
2. Quality - after ensuring that the amount of food you are eating suits your goal, the quality of what you are eating is CRITICALLY important. The body has thresholds for the amount of nutrients it needs daily.
3. Variety - for the best chance to meet your nutritional targets eating a variety of foods across a day/week/month means you are consuming foods with different nutrient compositions and providing those to your body.
4. Supplements - least important, but can be useful for some people, IF they are deficient. Largely useless for people who do not have deficiencies.
Overall - eat a balanced diet which includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats and you are likely to be well on track to good health!
